Life Insurance for Part-Timers

This is a recent arbitration award that dealt with a dispute regarding a life insurance claim by the estate of a deceased employee of the Revera Pine Villa retirement home. The employer claimed that it was not obligated to obtain coverage for the deceased employee because she was only a part-time employee. The arbitrator agreed with the union, SEIU Local 1 Canada, that the collective agreement entitled all employees, regardless of their status, to $25,000 in life insurance coverage. She ordered that the employer pay the full $25,000 to the estate of the deceased.
